Financial Transparency

How contributions are recorded, what they are spent on, and how that spending is reported.

Money given to the foundation is held for the work it was given for. This page explains how that commitment is kept in practice.

Recording every donation

Every donation is recorded with its amount, currency, date and reference. Where a donation is made for a named project, it is recorded against that project and is not used for anything else.

What contributions pay for

  • Investigations into police and judicial conduct, including travel, records and document review.
  • Legal review before publication, so that what we publish is defensible.
  • Fact-checking and public education material.
  • Relief delivered to vulnerable people, including welfare, medical and emergency support.
  • The staff who carry out this work, including salaries and the running costs of the office.

Project budgets

Each project published on this site carries a budget and a published target. The amount raised against that target is shown on the project page and is drawn from the same donation records, not from an estimate.

Reporting

A summary of income and expenditure is prepared for the board each quarter. An annual statement covering the financial year is prepared for the board and made available to donors on request.

Checks and controls

Payments are received through a regulated payment provider and are never handled by staff on a personal account. Expenditure requires approval by two people. Records are kept so that any single payment can be traced from the donor through to what it funded.

Questions

If you want to know how a particular contribution was used, ask us through the contact form and we will answer with reference to the record.
